Italian and Japanese Submarines

In this section, we cover actions of some of the submarines of the Italian Navy and the I.J.N. Any additional information is welcome.

ITALIAN BOATS

On 18 June, 1942 the Italian midget submarine C.B.2 under S.T.V. Artillio Russo, claimed the sinking of the Soviet submarine SC-208 at 44.17N x 33.13E. There was no Soviet confirmation of this action.

JAPANESE BOATS

On 24 December, 1941 the I.J.N. submarine I-21 under Matsumura sank the 8,272 GRT American steam tanker MONTEBELLO at 35.30N x 121.15W;

On 24 December, 1941 I-21 damaged the 6,418 GRT American steam tanker IDAHO with gunfire;

On 5 May, 1942 I-12 sank the 7,180 GRT American steamer JOHN ADAMS at 22.30S x 164.35E;

On 6 May, 1942 I-12 sank the 4,641 GRT Greek steamer CHLOE with torpedo & gunfire at 22.59S x 166.29E;

On 12 June, 1942 I-12 sank the 5,527 GRT Panamanian steamer GUATEMALA at 33.40S x 152.04E;

On 27 October, 1942 I-12 fired torpedoes at the battleship USS WASHINGTON but the torpedo detonated 350 yards before the ship, at 15.30S x 160.22W;

On 9 November, 1942 I-21 damaged the 7,176 GRT American Liberty Ship EDGAR ALLEN POE;

On 18 January, 1943 I-21 sank the 2,051 GRT Australian steamer KALINGO at 34.07S x 153.15E;

On 18 January, 1943 I-21 attacked the 10,222 GRT American steam tanker MOBILUBE and damaged her. The tanker was towed into port, but was declared a total loss;

On 22 January, 1943 I-21 damaged the 7,176 GRT American Liberty Ship PETER H. BURNETT at 32.54S x 159.32E. The ship was towed into port but declared a total loss;

On 8 February, 1943 I-21 sank the 4,812 GRT British steamer IRON KNIGHT at 30.51S x 150.38E;

On 10 February, 1943 I-21 attacked and damaged the 7,176 GRT American Liberty Ship STARR KING 34.15S x 154.20E. Although the ship was only damaged in the attack, she sank later the same day;

Command of I-21 passed from Matsumura to KK M. Inada On 11 November, 1943 I-21 now under Inada, sank the 6,711 GRT American ship CAPE SAN JUAN at 22.08S x 178.06W.

This was the last attack by I-21 on any shipping. I-21, still under Inada, was sunk a short time later (29 November, 1943) by aircraft of VC.35 from the aircraft carrier USS CHENANGO (CVE-28).
