Quite some time has passed since LARS SUNN PEDERSEN (3782-1994) and AGE JENSEN (3783-1994) successfully brought U-534 to the surface after the boat laid at the bottom of the sea for some 50 years. I am sure that LARS and AGE were surprised at the amount of money that was spent, and the time that flew by before anything definite could be done with this boat of history. We have been in constant contact with LARS regarding U-534 and her fate. Here is the FAX we just received from him:
End of May, estimated to be 27th, U-534 shall be in the UK to join the NAUTILUS MARITIME Museum in Birkenhead, Wirral near Liverpool, UK. It is a new project under supervision of WARSHIP PRESERVATION Trust. The intention is to visualize different kinds of ships - maritime effects - and not only from wars and conflicts in the 20th century seen from the Navy’s angle, but also the history of diving, myths and destinies from the ocean. Liverpool is not a coincidental choice because from here the Battle of the Atlantic was supervised from the headquarters ‘Western Approach’ which was reopened in 1993 on its 50th Anniversary, and this will be a part of the museum plans. Another item shall be the first-ever built steam submarine RESURGAM built in Birkenhead in 1879. It went down in 1880 and was found again in Autumn 1995 in very good condition. It is the intention to raise this boat in a very near future and to make it a part of the museum.” HARRY’S NOTE - I think the world owes a great deal to LARS and AGE, and to their crew for not giving up on U-534 once she was out of the water; for making sure she went to a good home where all who study the Battle of the Atlantic can view her. I know that LARS will keep us informed of any news about U-534 when it comes available. Many thanks LARS & AGE. MORE GOOD NEWS - Collectors will soon be able to actually own items from U-534!
