USS S-34 (SS 139) was EB 73C Design

She was built by United Iron Works;
Her keel was laid 28 May, 1918;
Her Sponsor was Miss F. Hellman;
She was commissioned 23 April, 1923;
Her first Skipper was Lt Raymond A. Deming;

The history of USS S-34:

7 December, 1941 - USS S-34 was providing services to the West Coast Sound School at San Diego at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor;
3 April, 1942 - Arrived for duty at Dutch Harbor, Aleutian Islands. LCDR Thomas L. Wogan, Commanding;
12 April, 1942 - Departed Dutch Harbor on first War Patrol, bound for the Kurile Islands;
December, 1942 - Under LCDR Robert F. Sellars, USS S-34 came back to San Diego;
January, 1943 - The boat was in San Diego for overhaul and sound school training services through April, 1943;
31 May, 1943 - During her sixth war patrol under Robert Keating, sank an unidentified cargo vessel of an estimated 3,000 tons with a daytime submerged periscope approach. Three torpedoes were fired and two hit the unknown ship off Torishimo Retto. This was not confirmed by post-war Japanese records.
30 July, 1943 - Completed seventh war patrol from Dutch Harbor then departed for San Diego to provide training services to the West Coast Sound School until the end of the war.
23 October, 1945 - the boat was decommissioned at Mare Island Navy Yard; struck from the Navy list 1 Nov, 1945; sold for scrap

War Patrols

1st war patrol ran from 12 April to 10 May 1942; the boat patrolled from DH Kuriles to DH; duration 28 days; no sinkings.

2nd war patrol ran from 28 May to 26 June 1942; the boat patrolled from DH Attu to DH; duration 29 days; no sinkings. USS S-34 was commanded on these patrols by T. L. Wogan

3rd war patrol ran from 14 September to 11 October 1942 the boat patrolled from DH Kiska to DH; duration 27 days with no sinkings.

4th war patrol ran from 23 Oct. - 21 Nov. 1942; the boat patrolled from DH Kiska to DH; duration was 29 days; no sinkings.

5th war patrol ran from 5 December to 25 December 1942; S-34 patrolled from DH Kiska to DH; duration was 20 days; no sinkings.

6th war patrol ran from 13 May, 1943 to 10 June, 1943; the boat patrolled from DH Kuriles to DH; duration was 28 days; no sinkings.

7th war patrol ran from 21 June to 30 July, 1943; the boat patrolled from DH Kuriles to DH; duration was 39 days; no sinkings

USS S-34 was commanded on these patrols by R. A. Keating. USS S-34 was awarded one battle star in World War II.
