3rd U-BootFlotille

Flotilla Commanders

by Harry Cooper

The 3rd U-BootFlotille was a ‘FrontFlotilla’, a combat Flotilla which moved from Kiel in October 1941 to La Rochelle (also known as ‘La Pallice’). Then in August 1944, they had to move to Norway in the face of the advancing Allied armies. This was a fairly small flotilla, but had many successful Skippers and boats. The bunkers at La Rochelle still stand but are off limits to the general public for safety reasons.

The Flotillen-Chef (Flotilla Commander) was:

    K.K. Hans-Rudolf Rösing from March 1941 to July 1941;
    KPLT Herbert Schultze from July 1941 to March 1942;
    KPLT v. Reiche from March 1942 to June 1942;
    K.K. Richard Zapp from June 1942 to October 1944
