BILL PLEXICO (4037-1994) compiled a list of U-Boats that lived a little past the end of the War. As you might guess, there are a lot of boats on this list, which requires this section to be in more than one issue of our KTB . We began in KTB #117. When the list of German U-Boats is finished, we will tell what happened to the US Navy submarines after the War. Many thanks for this list, BILL. U-953 was the boat of HERBERT WERNER (18-C-1983). It was surrendered at Trondheim in 1945, was used by Britain until 1949 when the boat was scrapped at the yard of Clayton and Davie at Dunston in June of 1946. U-977 was the boat of Heinz Schaeffer and this was the last boat to surrender in World War II. In fact, they surrendered at La Plata, Argentina on 17 August, 1945 MORE THAN THREE MONTHS AFTER the War ended. Schaeffer ‘explained’ all that in his book ‘U-BOAT 977’ which, in my opinion, is a great piece of mis-information. The boat departed her base in Norway with only about 75% fuel load. She went down around England, returned to base in Norway - DID NOT take on additional fuel, then went all the way to Argentina. That has always seemed to be outstanding fuel economy for a TYPE VII boat. At any rate, the boat was brought back to the USA and given over to the US Navy. On 13 November, 1946 U-977 was sunk as a target by USS ATULE.
