The 25th winner of the OAK LEAF CLUSTER to the KNIGHTS CROSS was K.K. CARL EMMERMANN (315-1987), Skipper of U-172.

EMMERMANN was a Member of SHARKHUNTERS until his death a few years ago.

CARL EMMERMANN was born in the seaport city of Hamburg on 6 March, 1915 and was in the Class 1934. His ultimate rank was KorvettenKapitän. He commissioned U-172, his only boat, and he made several war patrols with her during which he sank 27 ships with a total of 152,904 GRT.

After turning U-172 over to his I.W.O., HERMANN HOFFMANN (1365-1990), he held other posts within the U-Waffe until his last assignment, as C. O. of the 31st U-BootFlotille.

EMMERMANN won his KNIGHTS CROSS on 27 November, 1942 and the OAK LEAF CLUSTER on 4 July, 1943. He was the 25th U-Bootfahrer to win the OAK LEAF CLUSTER; the 256th overall in the Wehrmacht.
