Where is That Submarine?

Post-WWII U-Boats Deployments

by Bill Plexico

BILL PLEXICO (4037-1994)compiled a list of U-Boats that lived a little past the end of the War. As you might guess, there are a lot of boats on this list, which will require this section to be in more than one issue of our KTB Magazine. We began in KTB #117. When the listing of the German U-Boats is finished, we will tell what happened to many US Navy submarines after the War. Many thanks for this list BILL.

U-712 surrendered at Kristiansand and was used by the Royal Navy until she was scrapped in 1949.
U-766 was decommissioned at La Pallice (la Rochelle) in 1944, was taken over by French Navy as LAUBIE, scrapped in 1961.
U-792 was TYPE XVII Walter turbine boat, scuttled in May 1945 at Kiel. She was raised & sent to Britain for research.
U-793 was TYPE XVII Walter turbine boat, scuttled in May 1945 at Kiel. She was raised and sent to Britain for research.
U-862 was taken over by the Japanese when Germany surrendered and renamed I-502. When Japan surrendered, the boat was scuttled by the US Navy in Operation ‘ROAD’S END’ off Singapore.
U-873 was surrendered at Portsmouth, in the USA and was used as a torpedo target in 1946.
U-889 was surrendered to the Royal Canadian Navy in Halifax; was given to the US Navy in 1946; then destroyed.
U-926 was surrendered at Bergen, 1945 to the Royal Navy in 1945 then the boat was given to the Royal Norwegian Navy in 1947 where she was recommissioned KYA. The boat has since been decommissioned and we feel, broken up.
