ITALIAN BOATS 20 December, 1940 the Italian submarine CALVI under command of C.C. Giuseppe Caridi, sank the 5,162 ton British steamer CARLTON. 26 December, 1940 CALVI, still under Caridi, claimed sinking a ship of 10,000 tons. No confirmation. On 29 December, 1942, the CALVI, now under command of C.C. Emilio Olivieri, sank the 4,589 ton British steamer TREDINNICK. On 31 March, 1942 CALVI, still under Olivieri sank the 7,452 ton American tanker T. C. McCOBB On 8 April, 1942 CALVI, still under Olivieri, sank the 7,138 ton American tanker EUGENE V. R. THAYER. On 11 April, 1942 CALVI, still under Olivieri, sank the 2,161 ton Norwegian motorship BALKIA. On 12 April, 1942 CALVI, still under Olivieri, sank the 7,691 ton Panamanian tanker BEN BRUSH The readers must keep in mind that many American tankers were re-flagged as Panamanian prior to the American entry into the War to circumvent the Neutrality Act.
