Review by Dick Cole
by Peter Padfield Hardbound edition first published by Harper & Row, New York in 1984, containing 524 pages, 32 photographs. In the introduction of this book, Padfield apologizes to certain members of Dönitz’s family, knowing that he was taking advantage of their cooperation and kindness to write an uncomplimentary biography. Evidently, the author felt that myths about Dönitz existed that needed to be dispelled. Make your own decisions about that, but in my opinion the only value of this book is that it provides many personal details about Dönitz that are not available elsewhere in English. Don’t wait for all 119 of DICK’s book reviews to come out one month at a time - if you donate $25 or more to our COMPUTER FUND and request the entire list. We’ll send it right out.
