This is a new section, which will give a little data of each U-BootFlotille. Please feel free to send any additional data if you have it. The 1st U-BootFlotille was a ‘Frontflotille’; a combat Flotilla, which moved from Kiel to the very big French Navy base at Brest in June, 1940 after the fall of France, and was there until September of 1944.. Brest was home to more than just U-Boats. For a brief time, the battlecruisers SCHARNHORST and GNEISENAU were based here at Brest. And the giant battleship BISMARCK was en route to Brest when she was intercepted and destroyed by the Royal Navy. That was after she was spotted by a Lend-Lease American PBY CATALINA with ‘TUCK’ SMITH (2791-1993) in the cockpit. The Flotillen-Chef (Flotilla Commander) was:
K.K. Hans Cohausz until February, 1942; K.K. Heinz Buchholz until July, 1942; K.K. Werner Winter from July 1942 until the flotilla moved out in September, 1944.
