Shell Oil and U-2519

At the Pumps

by Harry Cooper

Not too many know that the big oil companies supplied all sides during World War II but here is a first-hand observation from someone who was there and saw it himself.

MIKE MARTINI (2407-1992) rode U-333 and later U-2519 under ‘ALI’ CREMER (114-+-1985) and he remembers near the end of the War, Shell Oil was filling the tanks of U-2519 with fuel. He said they thought nothing of it, since Shell had been supplying fuel all through the war.

and ESCAPE to South America

MIKE also confirmed that many were talking about escaping to South America, since the war was almost finished and Germany was in tatters. He told me that on the very day they watched Shell Oil putting fuel into U-2519, CREMER said that, with this fuel, they could now make it to South America if it became necessary.

When they arrived back at the boat the following day, Shell was pumping the diesel oil back out of the boat. I guess the old wartime phrase that ‘Loose lips sink ships’ could also mean that loose lips keep U-Boats dockside.
