U-127

Profile and History

by Harry Cooper

Type: IX-C
Built by: AG Weser (Bremen)
Launched: 1 February, 1941
Commissioned: 24 April, 1941
Feldpost Nr.: M40428
Sunk: 15 December, 1941
Sunk by: HMS NESTOR (DD)
Location sunk: SW of Cape Vincent
Position sunk: 36.28N x 9.12W (all hands lost)

The only Skipper of U-127 was Kapitänleutnant Bruno Hansmann. This boat conducted training patrols and her only war patrol took her toward the area west of Gibraltar where she was sunk.

U-127 had no other Skippers, and attacked no shipping. Because this boat was so new, she did not even have a conning tower emblem and since we have no information regarding which U-BootFlotille she was assigned to, we may assume that this was one of the boats that were en route to her French base but diverted to attack a convoy even before checking into the front base.
