She was built by United Iron Works;
Her keel was laid 1 April, 1918;
She was launched 21 November, 1918;
Her Sponsor was Mrs. E. S. Stainaker;
She was commissioned 29 October, 1920;
Her first Skipper was LCDR Stuart E. Bray;

History:
December 1941 . . .Providing submarine and anti-submarine warfare training services out of New London.
January 1942 . . . Relocated to Panama, Canal Zone. Carried out one defensive patrol in the Caribbean and two in the western approaches to the Canal.
July 1942 . . . After completing repairs in San Diego; underway for Dutch Harbor, Aleutians for duty.
12 August 1942 . . . Began first offensive patrol (fourth war patrol) out of Dutch Harbor, LCDR Frederick W. Lang Commanding. Returned 10 September, 1942.
24 September 1942 . . . Underway for fifth war patrol. After experiencing ongoing engine problems in mid-October she was forced to proceed to San Diego via Dutch Harbor for overhaul.
16 March 1943 . . . After completing overhaul & providing several weeks of services to the West Coast Sound School, USS S-30 returned to Dutch Harbor.
13 April 1943 . . . With repairs to the air compressors & fathometer completed, underway for sixth war patrol. Returned to Dutch Harbor on 2 May for refit.
24 April 1943 . . . Seventh war patrol begins. On 5 June, lost depth control during an approach on a destroyer. Took a 20 minute, 33 depth charge beating that was followed with five hours of additional charges.
6 June 1943 . . . Stevenson sank the 30 ton cargo carrying sampan NAGASHIGE MARU #2 during daylight gun action.
11 June 1943 . . . LT William A Stevenson commanding, fired three torpedoes for 2 hits after conducting a daytime submerged periscope approach and sank JINBU MARU, a 5,228 ton cargo vessel. Returned to Dutch Harbor on 22 June.
5 July 1943 . . . Underway for eighth war patrol.
28 July 1943 . . . Stevenson carried out a daytime submerged periscope approach on an unidentified cargo vessel of an estimated 7,500 tons. Three torpedoes were fired and two hit, causing an undetermined amount of damage. This attack was not confirmed by postwar records and credit was not received.
1 August 1943 . . Stevenson again carried out a daytime submerged periscope approach on an unidentified cargo vessel of an estimated 7,500 tons. Once again three torpedoes were fired with two hits causing an undetermined amount of damage. This attack was not confirmed by postwar records and credit was not received.
9 August 1943 . . . Ninth and final war patrol began from Massacre Bay, Attu. From 26 August through 16 September, attempts were made to shell the Japanese garrison on Matsuwa. This patrol ended in Dutch Harbor on 23 September. Within the week, USS S-30 was underway for San Diego and her final assignment - providing training services for the West coast Sound School until mid- September 1945.
9 October 1945 . . . Decommissioned at Mare Island Navy Yard.
24 October 1945 . . . Name struck from the Navy List.

WAR PATROLS OF USS S-30 (SS 135)

1st war patrol extended from 10 March 1942 thru 31 Mar; from PA Canal Zone to PA. Duration was 21 days; no sinkings.
2nd war patrol ran from 14 April 1942 through 13 May; from PA Canal Zone to PA. The duration was 29 days; no sinkings.
3rd war patrol was over unknown dates; from PA Canal Zone to PA covering unknown number of days; no sinkings.
4th war patrol was from 12 August 1942 thru 10 September; from DH Attu to DH. Duration was 29 days; no sinkings.
5th war patrol was from 24 September 1942 thru 9 October; from DH Kiska to DH. Duration was 15 days; no sinkings.
6th war patrol was from 13 April 1943 thru 2 May; from DH Attu to DH. Duration was 19 days; no sinkings.
7th war patrol was from 24 May 1943 through 22 June; from DH Kuriles to DH. Duration was 29 days during which time the 30 ton NAGASHIGE MARU #2 was sunk on 6 June at 43/5045N x 15656E; and the 5,131 ton JINBU MARU was sunk on 11 June at 43/5023N x 15538E.
8th war patrol was from 5 July 1943 through 9 August; from DH Kuriles to AT covering 35 days; no sinkings.
9th war patrol was from 26 August 1943 through 23 September; from AT Kuriles to DH covering 28 days; no sinkings.
