USS S-29 (SS 134) was EB 73 C design
History:
January 1944 - SHARKHUNTERS Member LCDR ANTHONY STUART MELVILLE-ROSS (1930-+-1991) was her last Skipper. She was his first command. After a day’s diving exercises, he left the boat charging batteries alongside the jetty at Portsmouth, England for the shore Officer’s Mess. While he was ashore, a hydrogen explosion occurred due to a defective ventilation system. One man was killed and the boat judged damaged beyond reasonable repair. She was towed onto a mud bank at Port Chester and abandoned (see KTB #85, page 27). Britain returned ownership of the boat to the US Navy but due to the unserviceable condition, the decision was made to leave her where she was. Sometime in 1956, she was sold for scrap (see KTB #83 page 13) September 1991 . .. RON KAWALSKI (1281-1991) reported that USS S-29 is still lying in the mud at Pounds Salvage Yard (KTB #84 page 13)
USS S-29 was stricken in 1946 and sold to H. G. Pound on 24 January, 1947. C.O. for all three war patrols was E. T. Sands.
