According to A. J. TARANTINO (1496-1990), that is what some historians called the Air Battle at Okinawa. He writes: “QUESTION - How can the Fleet stop the Japanese KAMIKAZE? 1948 saw me at Tsing-toa, China assigned to underway training unit, China. My rate, Chief Soundman (later changed to Sonarman). One evening at the CPO quarters, we were discussing the Battle of Okinawa (April 1945) and the raids on small boys (destroyers, pickets etc) and a gunner in our unit told us of his assignment to a special electronic ordnance group. They would install AA machine guns, loaded with all tracer rounds, on the derelict ships anchored far off Okinawa. These guns were pointed skywards and electronically controlled from a distance. When the air raids were plotted near the derelict, the signal was sent and all guns on the derelict would fire. The KAMIKAZE pilots would follow the red arc of the tracers to their deaths. We wiped out many Japanese pilots with this stunt. I never have seen anything written about this slick Yankee trick. Thought our Members should know about it and maybe someone else could add to the story.” Back to KTB #116 Table of Contents Back to KTB List of Issues Back to MagWeb Master Magazine List © Copyright 1995 by Harry Cooper, Sharkhunters International, Inc.
