In this section, we cover actions of some of the submarines of the Italian Navy and the I.J.N.. Any additional information is welcome. BRIN in 1941 at Cagliaro On 13 June, 1941 the Italian submarine BRIN under Luigi Longanesi-Cattani attacked five ships in different columns of Convoy SL.75 and claimed hits on four. Actually, they hit (and sank) only two ships; the 3,460 ton British steamer DJURDJURA and the 3,781 ton Greek steamer EIRINI KYRIAKIDES. This Skipper went on to command the Italian submarine DA VINCI. On 10 June, 1943 BRIN, now under TV Luigi Andreotti, fired a four torpedo spread and after a run time of one minute 20 seconds, they heard two detonations. Three torpedoes were fired and after one minute, two more detonations were heard. No confirmation of any hits. This was Andreotti’s only attack. I-17 On 21 December, 1941 the I.J.N. sub I-17, under command of KK K. Nishino, sank the 6.912 American tanker EMIDIO. On 24 December, 1941 I-17 damaged the 7,038 American tanker LARRY DOHENY. On 1 March, 1942 I-17 attacked the American tanker WILLIAM BERG with gunfire, but there was no damage and I-17 was forced to dive and flee by the destroyer USS KING. On 23 May, 1943 I-17, now commanded by KL Hakue Harada, sank the 10,169 ton Panamanian tanker STANVAC MANILA and when the tanker went, she took down two American PT boats; PT 165 and PT 173 which were alongside when the torpedoes hit..
