Sharkhunters

10 and 5 Years Ago

10 YEARS AGO in our KTB

In KTB #21, we were still trying to get Members to help design our SHARKHUNTERS emblem. As you see, we finally have selected our official emblem and with the help of our attorney GREG SCOTT (2012-A-1991), it's now an official US trademark.

We told about someone named Heinz Houben in California who was (and still is) trying to pass himself off as a German U-Boat Skipper complete with a great war record - all of which was a total work of fiction. He was never even in any of the German forces.

We reported the death of Fritz Poske, Skipper of U-504; also the death of K.K. AXEL-OLAF LOEWE (39-+-1984), Skipper of U-505 on her first two war patrols. There was an update on U-40 by JAK MALLMANN SHOWELL (73-1984) as this boat was found by a friend of his off England..

KTB #21 was only 6 pages long and done on an old typewriter. The information contained in that entire issue of our KTB would take about one page of today's computer set KTB Magazine.

5 YEARS AGO in our KTB

In KTB #67, we ran part of the story by OTTO GIESE (45-1984) covering his time in the Kriegsmarine, including U-405 and U-181. We also ran the continued story by BOB MAHER (221-1986) over his time in the US Navy, including the time his TIN CAN, the USS BORRIE sank U-405. There was information about the B-24 LIBERATOR bomber that dropped on U-156 during the LACONIA INCIDENT. There was more on the 'U-BOAT DEVELOPMENT IN THE FACE OF DISARMAMENT' by CHARLES GUNDERSEN (205-C-1986). There was more of the article by GrossAdmiral Karl Dönitz entitled 'IMPROVEMENTS IN U-BOAT EQUIPMENT & ARMAMENT'. The sad story of USS CABOT continued. There was a short piece about USS EDISON. U-Boats that were profiled were U-30, U-31 and U-32.

KTB #67 was again 24 pages long, but would require only about 6 pages of today's computer-set KTB Magazine - and there was still no protective envelope used.
