On Eternal Patrol

Obituaries

by Harry Cooper

ADOLF EICH (1185-1989) who served aboard PRINZ EUGEN, has departed on his ETERNAL PATROL. Fair winds to you ADDIE.

On September 13 this year, ADMIRAL EBERHARD GODT (344-1987) began his ETERNAL PATROL. ADMIRAL GODT was Right-Hand to Admiral Dönitz when Dönitz was FdU (Commander of Submarines) and later GODT became FdU himself when Dönitz became head of the Kriegsmarine. ADMIRAL GODT was living history and will be missed. He was in his mid-ninties.

WILHELM GRAP (213-1986) was a crewman with U-506. When they went to aid U-156 during the famous 'LACONIA INCIDENT' WILLI shot many photographs, which he donated to our SHARKHUNTERS RESEARCH CENTER.

He really proved our statement that 'Yesterday's Enemies are Today's Friends' as WILLI always attended the National Convention of the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II.

WILLI always helped, quietly, with our visits to Germany and never asked for recognition. He and his wife, Marrianne, have been our guests over here. It was their dream to live out their lives in the USA, but it was not to be. They were at the airport for the flight to their new home in the USA when WILLI collapsed at the airport. He died a few days later. Marrianne called me with the sad news, and ended our call by saying:

"WILLI loved the US and was looking forward to living on the Gulf of Mexico where his boat patrolled. But instead he is buried on the Baltic."

WILLI was a friend, and he will be missed by many.

Recently, CAPTAIN VICTOR HAWKINS (1364-A-1990) lost his beloved wife, CAPTAIN PATTIE ROBINSON (1497-A-1990). PATTIE was formerly in a US Army M.A.S.H. group.

Two years ago, she celebrated her 70th birthday with her first sport parachute jump and she had been training in helicopters so she could celebrate her 71st birthday with a solo flight in a chopper; but she was already too ill. VIC and PATTIE have been at SHARKHUNTERS gatherings and they have been guests in our home. PATTIE was a fine lady, and she will be missed by all.
