U-Boat and Submarine Factoids

by Oblt. Ernst Schmidt (10-1983)

  • the Walter boat (TYPE XXVI) was using hightest hydrogen peroxide for its gas turbines? It had a displacement of 600 tons, a compliment of 25 men, reached submerged 24 knots and maintained it for over 24 hours. After the German surrender 3 prototype boats and all construction plans and fabrication tools fell into Russian hands.

  • the Allies built at the end of WW II merchant ships at the rate of 1 million tons a month? This rate was more than U-Boats could sink.

  • since mid-September 1943 U-Boats used Acoustic Torpedoes (TYPE T-5) against destroyers? They followed the propeller noise. The British then countered with 'FOXERS' in form of a squawker buoys to lead torpedoes astray.

  • Did you know that the United States Navy submarines sank 214 naval and 1,178 merchant ships in World War II?

  • From the data compiled and sent by CAPTAIN ROBERT THEW (333-+-1987) we learn that the 2nd largest ship ever sunk by a submarine was the 42,348 ton liner EMPRESS OF BRITAIN. She was sunk on 28 October, 1940 by U-32 under Kplt Hans Jenisch.
