German Submariners Lost in WWII

by Harry Cooper

What is the significance of this number? No one has been able to have the correct number of German U-Bootfahrer killed in action in the Second World War. 33,000 is the figure most widely used, but that is the approximate total of all U-Bootfahrer killed AND captured.

We are very proud that the U-Boot Ehrenmal allowed SHARKHUNTERS to take the only list of its kind in the world, of the names on the bronze plaques in Möltenort back here to the USA to put it all on computer. We took great care of this book and our Computer Specialist, Carrie Waugh spent many long hours getting it entered. That list, along with additional lists provided by other sources, are combined to make this the most complete list of fallen U-Boot Fahrer anywhere in the world.

Through death or capture, the Kriegsmarine lost approximately 33,000 men. The US Navy submarine service lost 3,505 men.

In the US Navy submarines, one man in seven was lost.

In the U-Bootwaffe - one man in seven came home. And the U-Bootwaffe was the only over subscribed service in the German forces right up to the end; even when theyknew their very first patrol would be a one-way ride. That is bravery and honor!

Many thanks to our U-Boot friends who helped with this list.
