Grey Wolf, Grey Sea

Book Review

Biographies and Ship's Histories

Any biography or story of a particular boat written by a person who did not have first-hand information must be carefully examined, especially those that give detailed descriptions of events or conversations. A common technique among unscrupulous authors, trying to make their writing more interesting, is to invent dialogue or to create scenarios that they think might have occurred. This is similar to the 'docu-dramas' common on American television.

A good biographer will list his sources, including anyone who was interviewed to obtain information. This is usually given in the introduction or acknowledgment section of the work. If insufficient documentation is provided to account for the intimate details, the reader should be skeptical of their authenticity.

"GREY WOLF, GREY SEA" by Gasaway, E. B.

Paperback edition published by Ballantine Books, New York in 1970 containing 245 pages, 14 photographs. Some later editions omit the photographs. Available as of July, 1989.

Primarily the story of U-124, the EDELWEISSBOOT, and its two commanders, WILHELM SCHULZ (162-+-1986) and Jochen Mohr. This account also includes the brief career of U-64, SCHULZ's previous command. U-124 was noted not only for its own successes, but also for later successes of many of the junior officers that served aboard her. This book is well written, highly detailed and nicely documented. Forwards by both SCHULZ and GrossAdmiral Karl Dönitz.

(HARRY'S NOTE - this is an OUTSTANDING book!)
