However, over the years it has been suggested the ship was actually carrying more than $5 BILLION in booty that the Japanese had collected during the war. Only one person of more than 2,000 aboard survived. AWA MARU had been many miles off the course the Allies agreed to for safe passage. Further, the QUEENFISH was not aware of the mission; AWA MARU was hidden by fog and traveling at a speed equal to a warship's when the submarine fired four torpedoes. China began salvage operations in 1979 at the site 190 feet below the surface in the Taiwan Strait. No mention was made of the treasure.
