Corrections: U-124

by Harry Cooper

U-124

We know that means there is an error that needs correcting, and in KTB 113 we made quite a few. K.K. REINHARD HARDEGEN (102-LIFE-1985) telephoned here to give us the corrections as concerns U-124. He made two Feindfahrten (war patrols) on U-124 as Kommandantschuler - Skipper in training. He tells us:

  • The photo on the front cover is taken on 13 November, 1940 as U-124 under command of WILHELM SCHULZ (162-+-1986) comes into Lorient. Look at the man in the conning tower with the camera at his eye to the left of the photo - that is CAPTAIN HARDEGEN. The man leaning against the periscope is SCHULZ
  • Look at the photo on page 7. That is indeed SCHULZ at the left of the photo, but the man to the left is HARDEGEN.
  • It was reported incorrectly - in our KTB Magazine as well as in other books, that the large green frog on the front of the tower was the emblem of Jochen Mohr when he took command of U-124. That is not correct. CAPTAIN HARDEGEN tells us that this was put on while the boat was still under SCHULZ. Over August and September of 1940, they were stuck on a weather-reporting patrol and when they returned to port, the green frog was painted on.

CAPTAIN HARDEGEN, we thank you sincerely for taking the time - and the expense - to telephone and give us the correct information. It is only through the involvement of the veterans themselves, the men who were there, that we can maintain accurate and correct records of the actions of history.

Awa Maru

YOYA KAWAMURA (1739-LIFE-1991) sends this correction:

"The AWA MARU was not a hospital ship. She was a passenger liner. She was transporting relief goods for Allied Prisoners of War and she was guaranteed safe passage by the Allied authorities. She was displaying green crosses on her hull."

Thanks much YOYA. We always try to be totally accurate, but when we slip; we do indeed appreciate the updates from our Members.
