U-Boat War

by Dick Cole (204-A-1986)

Bucheim, Lothar-Günther "U-BOAT WAR"
Hardbound edition published by Alfred Knopf, New York in 1978 containing 312 page, 218 photographs.

A translation of 'U-BOOT KRIEG' published in 1976 by R. Piper in Germany. Bucheim was a wartime artist who accompanied several U-Boats on war patrols, and this is his account of these voyages told in words and pictures. While autobiographical in nature, the book reflects Bucheim's artistic background. He merges several patrols into one, uses an abrupt, disconnected style of writing and he provided little factual detail. By doing this, he may achieve his goal of giving an impression of what life was like on a U-Boat, but he also makes the reader wonder what liberties he took with artistic license.

The main value of this book lies in its photographs.

This is the last of the 'AUTOBIOGRAPHIES & BIOGRAPHIES' section of DICK's book reviews. With KTB #114 next month, we will begin 'BIOGRAPHIES AND SHIP HISTORIES'
