Southern Cross

Yacht

by Harry Cooper

SOUTHERN CROSS was initially the huge yacht of millionaire Howard Hughes until he sold it for $1,000,000 in the early 1930's to the richest man in the world, Axel Wenner-Gren. He owned the BOFORS armament Company, founded the ELECTROLUX Vacuum Cleaner Company - and his mistress, Inga Arvaad, was the date of Adolf Hitler at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games - until Inga began a hot romantic affair with young Lt. John F. Kennedy which got him sent out of Washington to PT-109 in the South Pacific.

The Italian Count Edmundo diRobilant and his new bride enjoyed their honeymoon aboard SOUTHERN CROSS while he was on his way to his position as Manager of L.A.T.I., the Italian National airline in Rio. Count Edmundo was soon arrested for sending radio messages to Germany about Allied ship movements.

When U-30 under Fritz-Julius Lemp sank the liner ATHENIA, the first victim of the War, SOUTHERN CROSS just happened to be just a few miles away and picked up survivors. Axel Wenner-Gren also used SOUTHERN CROSS when he led 'archaeological' expeditions to South American countries prior to the War in which they were well equipped with high-powered radio transmitters, but with no picks and shovels.

Wenner-Gren owned what is now Paradise Island off Nassau in the Bahamas, and his huge SOUTHERN CROSS was often home to parties where the guests included the heads of General Motors, Standard Oil, gold mine owner Sir Harry Oakes (who was brutally murdered in June, 1944) - and with the abdicated King of England, the Duke of Windsor and his wife.

SOUTHERN CROSS was frequently anchored in Nassau Harbor until Ossie Mosley, nephew of famed Sir Oswald Mosley, took his Bahamas Volunteer Defense Force on board and confiscated all the weapons. Shortly thereafter, Wenner-Gren was informed that he was really not welcome in the Bahamas anymore and he sailed aboard SOUTHERN CROSS to Mexico and South America in the last years of the War.

Here is our question - what happened to SOUTHERN CROSS? Was this huge luxury yacht broken up for scrap? Did she sink at sea? Is she still afloat with new owners? This is a critical question and the answer is necessary for additional research being done by SHARKHUNTERS 'ETTAPANDIENST' Agents. If you have any knowledge of the fate of SOUTHERN CROSS, please let me know here at SHARKHUNTERS HQ. Thanks in advance.
