Italian Submarines Beilul and Biachi

by Harry Cooper

On 7 June, 1940 the Italian submarine BEILUL under command of CC Paulo Vagliasindi reported damage to the Royal Navy destroyer HMS WHIRLPOOL. This was in error, as the ship was not damaged but was sunk on 5 July by U-34.

On 9 December, BEILUL, still under Vagliasindi, claimed one hit each on two steamers in a convoy after a torpedo run time of nearly 3 minutes. There was no confirmation.

On 12 June, 1943, BEILUL, under TV Ottorino Beltrami, fired torpedoes at a group of destroyers and reported two detonations after 2 minutes and 28 seconds. There was no confirmation of anything hit.

BEILUL was an ADUA Class Italian submarine, built by C.R.D.A. in Monfalcone between 1936 and 1937.

On 25 August, 1940 the Italian submarine BIANCHI, commanded by CC Adalberto Giovaninni, reported sinking an armed patrol boat. There is no confirmation.

On 14 February 1941 BIANCHI sank the 4,514 ton British steamer BELCREST out of Convoy SC.21.

On 23 Feb, 1941 BIANCHI assisted U-107 in sinking of the British ocean broadcasting vessel MANISTEE. A torpedo hit from U-107 slowed the ship and an attack was made by BIANCHI but there is no confirmation of any hits. U-107 made several more attacks and sank the ship.

On 24 February, 1941 BIANCHI attacked and sank the 3,385 ton British steamer LINARIA but reported in error, that she had sunk WAYNEGATE instead. That ship was sunk around the same time in the same convoy (OB.288d) by U-73 under Rosenbaum. Giovaninni commanded BIANCHI in all her combat actions.
