Sharkhunters

10 and 5 Years Ago

by Harry Cooper

10 YEARS AGO in our KTB

In KTB #18 we reported on the death of U-47, U-100 and U-99, with the loss of Prien and Schepke, and the capture of OTTO KRETSCHMER (122-LIFE-1985). The three great ACES of the U-Bootwaffe were removed from the War in one great convoy battle - two of them (Schepke and KRETSCHMER) within an hour or so of each other. This issue also began the series entitles "U-BOATS IN OUR BACKYARD" written by HARRY COOPER (1-LIFE-1983) about Operation 'PAUKENSCHLAG'.

That issue of our KTB Magazine was only 4 pages long. It would have required LESS THAN ONE PAGE of our current computer typeset 36 page magazine.

5 YEARS AGO in our KTB

In KTB #64 we reported that my son two-year-old SEAN PATRICK COOPER (1/2-LIFE-1987) had recovered fully, thank God, from a nearly disastrous situation during our 3rd ANNUAL CONVENTION. OTTO GIESE (45-1984) learned that he had skin cancer. There were questions about TESLA propulsion. Was Rahmlow crazy? He was the Skipper of U-570 who surrendered a submarine in good fighting condition - to an airplane! DR. FRANCO LENZI (1049-+-1989), Curator of the Italian Submarine Archives, said that the rumor that an Italian submarine assisted U-81 in the sinking of the aircraft carrier HMS ARK ROYAL and damaging of the battleship HMS MALAYA was absolutely without foundation - that U-81 was totally alone and carried out this entire attack without assistance.

This issue was only 20 pages and would require less than five pages of today's computer typeset 36 page-long KTB Magazine.
