Pillenwerfer

U-boat Term

by Harry Coooper

PILLENWERFER

From the list of U-Bootwaffe terms and slang compiled by MIKE KOSS (299-1987) we learn that this was a cartridge released from the U-Boat which emitted air bubbles to deflect sonar waves away from the hull of the U-Boat. It also gave the same noise as the propellers turning so the surface ship would concentrate on the bubbles, thus allowing the U-Boat to escape.

PILLENWERFER was something like a large ALKA-SELTZER which was fired out of TUBE 6 on the TYPE VII boats & TUBE 7 on the TYPE IX boats.

Now for KTB #113 next month, do you know what was AUF EIGENE FAUSTE?
