The Drumbeater and
U-Deutschland

by KK Reinhard Hardegen

K.K. REINHARD HARDEGEN (102-LIFE-1985) wrote with some comments on the article we ran on U-DEUTSCHLAND and also personal memories of Kapitän Paul König.

"You must know that Kapitän König was a friend of my family. He lived at first in the house of my grandmother and from 1923 till 1931 when he retired, in our house. I am the man who knows most of him, I wrote his biography, I named the street where I live after him. The article in the KTB about him wasn't right.

The date is wrong - on the 23rd August 1916 she was in Helgoland and met there with the sister boat 'U-BREMEN' with Kapitän Schwarzkopf. On 24 the August she anchored in the mouth of the Weser and on the 25th August she made the trip up the Weser River to Bremen.

The story started not at the Hotel Adlon in Bremen, because in Bremen we never had this hotel. It was the Hotel Adlon in Berlin where he met Alfred Lohmann and not during October, but in September 1916. The Adlon was one of the most famous hotels not only in Germany but in Europe.

Kapitän König left the SCHLESWIG not in October but early in September."

CAPTAIN HARDEGEN, vielen dank for this update. I appreciate most sincerely your comments and corrections.
