Type XVI

German U-Boat

by Harry Cooper

This was to be a sea-going submarine tender that was herself, a submarine. The TYPE XVI was going to be a larger (5,000 tons) boat than the TYPE XV (which was never produced) and was to be a seagoing supply shop with replacement machinery, extra parts, more torpedo reloads and ammunition, food - even a doctor on board. Like the TYPE XV, it was determined that such a huge submarine, with inherent slow diving speed, would make too easy a target for aircraft and ASW forces, so the project was scrapped long before even a prototype was begun.

In KTB #112 next month, we read about some of the German experimental submarines.
