Italian Sub Bagnoli and
Japanese Sub I-11

In this section, we cover actions of some of the submarines of the Italian Navy and the I.J.N. Any additional information is welcome.

On 12 June, 1940 the Italian submarine BAGNOLINI under CC Franco Tosoni-Pittoni sank the 4,180 ton British light cruiser HMS CALYPSO;
On 18 September, 1940 BAGNOLINI sank the 3,302 ton Spanish steamer CABO TORTOSA;
On 19 December, 1940 BAGNOLINI sank the 3,660 ton British steamer AMICUS;
On 1 January, 1941 BAGNOLINI attacked the 15,000 ton British Armed Merchant Cruiser NORTHERN PRIDE.
After this patrol, Tosoni-Pittoni transferred off and command went to CC Guilio Chialamberto, former Skipper of MARCONI.
On 23 July, 1941 BAGNOLINI attacked ships in what is assumed Convoy OG.68, and claimed two hits on a tanker & one hit on a freighter in that Convoy, but no confirmation. This was Chialamberto's only action.
On 28 May, 1942 BAGNOLINI under TV Mario Tei attacked a CANADALITE CLASS tanker with four torpedoes and claimed one hit. There is no confirmation.

On 20 July 1942, the I.J.N. submarine I-11 under K.K. T. Hichiki, sank the 4,835 Greek steamship G. S. LIVANOS;
On 21 July, 1942 I-11 sank the 3,290 ton American steamer COAST FARMER;
On 26 July 1942 I-11 damaged the Australian steamer COOLANA
This was the only action seen by Hichiki; and command passed to K. K. M. Tagami, previously the Commander of I-25.

On 20 July, 1943 I-11 under Tagami, attacked and damaged the Australian light cruiser HMAS HOBART; On 11 August, 1943 I-11 attacked and damaged the American LIBERTY SHIP SS MATTHEW LYON.

There were no more attacks by I-11 during the War.

Losses

18 October, 1940 the Italian submarine DURBO was sunk by HMS WRESTLER, HMS FIREDRAKE and aircraft (Squadron unknown) at 35.54N x 04.17W;

20 October, 1940 (date approximate) the Italian submarine FOCA was lost to unknown causes - possibly a mine - in the eastern Mediterranean;

8 November, 1940 the Italian submarine FAA DI BRUNO was sunk by HMS HAVELOCK at 56.01N x 17.50W;

14 December 1940 the Italian submarine CAPITANO RAFFAELE TARANTINI was sunk by the Royal Navy submarine HMS THUNDERBOLT at 45.25N x 01.22W;

14 December, 1940 the Italian sub. NAIADE was sunk by HMS HYPERION & HMS HEREWARD at 32.03N x 25.26E;

6 January, 1941 the Italian submarine MARCELLO was sunk by aircraft of RAF 210 Squadron at 58.38N x 11.51W;
