Hopmann and U-405

Profile

by Harry Coooper

Some months ago, one of our Members asked what kind of man was K.K. Hopmann, Skipper of U-405. His brother was lost in the Battle of the Atlantic to an attack from U-405. We asked the man best qualified to answer this; OBLT OTTO GIESE (45-1984) served aboard this boat for many war patrols. OTTO tells us:

"I had signed off from U-405 October 1942 in Norway. All I can say about K.Kapt Hopmann, whose dad was an admiral, that he had been a commandant who was loved by his crew and who tried very hard under often rough circumstances in the Polar Sea to stay always in close contact with convoys and- if chances were right - to attack. Of course, he was one of the commandants who was not a 'wild attacker' but he used his senses. He was always willing to listen to his officers before he came to his final conclusions."

Vielen dank OTTO, and best wishes for success of your new book.
