K.K. REINHARD HARDEGEN (102-LIFE-1985) told that, during a heavy depth charge attack with U-123 on the bottom, he wanted to give his crew the impression that all was going well and that there was no real danger from the destroyer above, so he sat down and opened a book. He thought that the crew would see the Captain reading a book and realize that the danger was small, and they too would be calm. It appeared to be working but even so, his II. W. O., Lt zS Horst von Schroeter at the time, leaned over, said: "Would it be better if the book were right-side-up?" and he turned the book over in HARDEGEN's hand. CAPTAIN HARDEGEN tells of this and many more great insights during his interview on the tape 'SEVEN SKIPPERS'. Also, he sent me updates to the story we recently ran on the commerce submarine, U-DEUTSCHLAND, which we were going to run here in KTB #111, but the space just is not available this month. Watch KTB #112 next month for this update.
