U-Boat Engine and HMS Furious Corrections

by Harry Cooper

In KTB #108, we said that the engines in the first dieselboat were made by M.A.N., which meant Mannheim, Augsburg, Nürnberg. Not so - I'm sorry to say. KEITH GILL (3284-1993) sent a FAX with the correct information. He writes:

"Suspecting that this was not quite correct, I looked at the U-505 diesel manual and confirmed my suspicion. It actually stands for Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg. The full title is MAN A.G., Werk Augsburg. A.G. stands for Aktiengesellschaft, which is always abbreviated to A. G. (as in our Inc.) and Werk-Augsburg most likely the factory where the engines originated."

Many thanks KEITH. It is through sharp-eyed Members who really read our KTB Magazine thoroughly, that we catch the few errors that slip past this desk, and so keep history accurate.

HMS Furious

We know this means HARRY COOPER (1-LIFE-1983) goofed somehow and in KTB #109, he did. Under 'Little Known Submarine Facts' (page 27 col 1) it was reported that the only ROYAL NAVY aircraft carrier to survive the War was HMS FURIOUS.

KTB #109 was still hot in the hands of ROYAL NAVY CAPTAIN VICTOR HAWKINS (1364-A-1990) when he called with the news that MANY ROYAL NAVY carriers survived the War. He named a bunch of them on the phone, and I knew then that I had goofed. So VIC very kindly sent a list of the ROYAL NAVY carriers that survived the War. I won't use the space to name them all, but many more than HMS FURIOUS survived.

My apologies for the incorrect data on the ROYAL NAVY carriers; and many thanks to VIC for pointing this out.
