Cold War Not So Cold?

USS Kitty Hawk vs. Chinese Nuclear Sub

by Harry Cooper

According to a report, filed some months after the incident, the US Navy aircraft carrier USS KITTY HAWK was involved in a serious confrontation with a Chinese nuclear submarine in international waters in the Yellow Sea over 27 to 29 October, 1994.

The Skipper of USS KITTY HAWK dispatched three S-3 anti-submarine aircraft to drop sonobuoys to track the Chinese sub while the Chinese Air Force scrambled jet fighters which flew within sight of the carrier.

We aren't sure who, if either side, blinked first, but the Chinese submarine withdrew to her homeport of Qingdao and USS KITTY HAWK and her battle group left the area.

Through a U.S. Military official in Beijing, the Chinese government advised that if such a confrontation should happen again, orders would be to shoot to kill!

This is very unfortunate that SHARKHUNTERS Members would be on the edge of shooting at each other. ADMIRAL WU (2270-1992) is the Commander of the East Sea (Yellow Sea) Fleet and he was our gracious host when we visited his headquarters at Wusun Naval Base in Shanghai. There are many Members of SHARKHUNTERS in the US Navy, on ships and submarines. I hope that we are not forced to report that our Members are shooting at each other.
