The First Diesel Submarine?

U-19

by Sigmund Klaussner

Here is some research scoop from SIGMUND KLAUSSNER (211-1986). He writes:

"U-19, built by Krupp for 2.0 million Gold Mark in his GERMANIA yard in 1910 was the FIRST Unterseeboot to be equipped with MAN diesels (two 850 hp units), providing a best speed of 15 knots on the surface; she could do nine knots submerged! Designed for a maximum depth of 50m (164 feet) the U-19 and her 22 sisters (all Krupp products between 1910-1914) did on occasion, manage more than 80 meters.

U-19 was a boat of 650 tons with a range of 7,600 sea miles at a speed of eight knots. Diving time to eight meters of water above the tower was 90 seconds. She carried four 50cm torpedo tubes (two forward, two aft) with six reloads. An 8.8cm deck gun was later added.

The U-19 is considered by naval historians to be the father of the first series of modern diesel-driven submarines. It took Krupp 31 months each to build the U-19 and her sisters."

Thanks for the input SIG. As an addition, almost EVERY World War II U-Boat was equipped with MAN diesels. MAN was short for Mannheim, Augsburg, Nurnberg. Even today, city busses in Chicago and other major cities are built by MAN.
