Standard Submarine Phraseology

We continue with Standard Submarine phraseology from the book that was used to train American submariners back in the days of World War II. Thanks to EUGENE ZIEGLER (2143-1992) for this book that was once classified as ‘RESTRICTED’.

FREQUENTLY USED TERMS

The following terms, which are common to a number of commands. are used to avoid confusion and misunderstanding.

(a) ‘Section one,’ ‘Section two,’ and ‘Section thuh-ree.’ ‘First section’ sound too much like ‘third section’.

(b) ‘Shut’ ‘Close’ is often mistaken for ‘open’ or ‘blow’.

(c) ‘Shoot’ in preliminary commands. ‘Fire’ is used only when giving orders to open fire.

(d) ‘Permission to.....’ as a standard request before beginning an operation requiring special permission. For example: ‘Permission to start air charge.’ ‘Granted.’

(e) ‘Man’ and ‘secure’, as applied to various types of equipment.
