(3380-1994) MASAJIRO KAWATO USA
When MIKE (his American name) was only in third grade he and some friends built an 'airplane' from bamboo, canvas and powered by a bicycle tube like the rubber-band models one would buy in a hobby shop today. It flew, in a manner of speaking, off a 1,000 foot cliff but it got him hooked on flying. When he was 16 (in 1941) he volunteered as a Junior student in pilot training where he hoped to enter the full pilot training program. After more than two years of tough training, MIKE entered the War as a fighter pilot at Rabaul in the South Pacific.

During his time as a ZERO pilot, MIKE scored 19 aerial victories, was shot down 5 times himself, received 17 combat wounds, and was "killed" in combat in 1945 in the area of the Solomon Islands. His funeral was held the same year in his home in Japan. I suspect that his family and friends were pleased to learn later that he was indeed, still alive.

In 1976, MIKE broke the world distance record for single engine propeller aircraft in a trans-Pacific solo flight from Haneda Airport, Japan to Crescent City, California in a PIPER 260 COMANCHE which was modified to carry 480 gallons of fuel. That was enough to take him the 35 hours and 15 minutes into the history books......again.

The first time MIKE entered aviation history in a big way was when he scored aerial victory number 13, a US MARINE CORSAIR flown by Major Greg 'PAPPY' Boyington, leader of the famed BLACK SHEEP SQUADRON. MIKE met Boyington many years after the War and they became friends. MIKE is the only Japanese ZERO ACE living in the USA.

(3383-1994) LIONEL L. TAYLOR USA

(3385-1994) WALTER BOENER USA
He was born in Villarrica, Paraguay, the son of a German diplomat and was raised and educated in Paraguay, Brazil, Uraguay, Argentina and Germany and when a break in diplomatic relations between South American countries and Germany occurred, WALTER and his family were returned to Germany. He was an avid pilot from his early years, he began flying HITLER YOUTH gliders as a teen-ager. He had great success with the LUFTWAFFE flying Me 109 aircraft with JG 54 (the GREEN HEART HUNTERS) and a short time in a Me 262 jet fighter with JG 7.

He was outspoken, and was arrested by the GESTAPO for his remarks that American fliers were not murderers and criminals, but were just doing their job. He was sentenced to death but a fortunate air raid on Berlin helped him escape prison, where he had an adventurous trip through Germany and ultimately to the lines of the French FIRST DIVISION. He worked with US INTELLIGENCE to find NAZI activists and later became an aid to GENERAL ADOLF GALLAND (2854-1993) where the 'FIGHTER GENERAL' was putting together the ARGENTINE AIR FORCE for General Juan Peron. WALTER later returned to his native Paraguay to help oust President Chavez. He is now a US citizen.

(3586-1994) WILLIAM N. FRANCE USA

(3387-1994) MRS. LOUISE WALKER USA
MRS. WALKER is the widow of LT Bill Walker, the leader of the saboteur party off USS BARB when they planted explosives beneath the rails of a Japanese railroad and blew up a troop train. This was the ONLY time in the course of World War II that American fighting forces set foot on the home islands of the Japanese Empire.

(3388-1994) WOLFGANG FREESE GERMANY
Currently a chef in a major German department store in north Germany, WOLFGANG had his interest in U-Boats aroused during his time in the new German Navy (the BUNDSMARINE) from January 1988 until December 1991. He took many courses to improve himself and advanced to Petty Officer, and served aboard U-25 (S 174). He loved his time riding the boats, and he was the Radioman, which he said was very nice because he knew first-hand what the Skipper was planning, and knew what orders were coming to the boat even before the Skipper. He is interested in the history of the U-Bootwaffe of the KRIEGSMARINE and is in touch with researchers in England, Scotland, Finland, Canada and Germany.

(3406-1994) JAMES KORSTEN USA
(3407-1994) GERARD THORNE CANADA

(3408-1994) PAUL K. MENGELBERG CANADA
Trained to become an industrial electrician and shortly thereafter, joined the German Navy 'COASTAL COMMAND in Wilhelmshaven in 1934 at the age of 17. He was trained as a range-finder for anti-aircraft 8.8cm and long-range 21cm gunning. By 1936, by his request, he joined the Fleet, but first he underwent landtraining (Bootcamp). Then he was sent to the 2nd Torpedoboat Flotilla in Wilhelmshaven, aboard the torpedoboat ILTIS which was built in 1926. This was sort of a small destroyer of about 900 tons. PAUL went with her to Spain during the Spanish conflict in 1938.

Upon returning, ILTIS was decommissioned and part of the crew went to the shipyards to become familiarized with the new destroyers, the forerunner of the NARVIK class. He was on Z-23 (HERMANN SCHOMANN) just briefly as he had put in for the U-Bootwaffe and was trained to become a submariner & was back to the shipyard for training in U-Boats, and was aboard U-39, a TYPE IX-A boat. She was commissioned 1938 and her Skipper was Kplt Gerd Glattes. This was the first U-Boat to be lost in World War II and her entire crew became British POW's. PAUL transferred off before U-39 departed and was on one of the two very rare TYPE I-A boats, U-26. He rode her for five war patrols, but they had to scuttle the boat because she was too badly damaged from an eight hour depth-charging. The crew was rescued after two or three hours by HMS ROCHESTER and PAUL ultimately ended up in captivity in Canada. He got to love Canada so much that he emigrated there more than 50 years ago, where he and his wife Agi, live today. We noted that PAUL is a former crewmember and friend of our good friend ERNST GOTHLING (1225-1989).

PAUL is an amateur radio operator (HAM) and he suggests that we form a SHARKHUNTERS radio network. OKAY, that's a good idea - who can show us how to accomplish this?

At 6'4" JON was a bit tall for the boats, but he rode them anyhow. He went to the US NAVY school of mine warfare then to USS BUSHNELL (AS 15) for a little more than 3 years in Key West and while he was there, he was able to ride a whole bunch of USN boats and had a multitude of jobs such as torpedo handling, working in the mine shop & while at sea stood helmsman & annunciator watches. He went up the Mississippi River twice to New Orleans, also to Tampa, Guantanimo, St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, San Juan Puerto Rico and Port au Prince Haiti, they even stopped off in Havana before Fidelito came to power.

Life has taken a sour turn for JON, as he learned that he has MS! He said that life has been HELL for him ever since.

JON says: "I know many Members' wives take pleasure in their husband's Membership, that is why I'm sending a photo of my grandson, for I will take him under my sails and try to teach him the ways of a better world."

(3424-1994) D. ROBERT SHINE USA

(3425-1994) JORGE UBIETTA USA
"My own personal interest in the military began when I was very young. My father was knowledgeable of many different aspects of the War and the hardware utilized. In the past 7 or 8 years I have also developed a special interest in the submarine service, more particularly the German U-Boats. At first it was only the submarines themselves. However, after reading countless books on the lives & exploits of many U-Boat Skippers I have come to appreciate the hardships endured by these young men and their crews. These men, along with all submariners of other nations during this epoch, should be hailed for their many sacrifices under those most unbearable circumstances they were exposed to.

Every war has taken heavy tolls of the youth of many different countries. Without exploring all the various political and/or philosophical ideologies attributed to each conflict the fact remains that men and women have gone into battle striving to achieve their leaders' objectives. Many did not wholly agree on the methods to fulfill these, nonetheless their patriotism & loyalty carried them on. I salute ALL true sailors, soldiers & airmen of all wars who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the benefit of their fellow human beings.

"I was born in the UK in 1934, grew up in wartime, witnessed dogfights between SPITFIRES and various German planes. Also, nearby was a German P.O.W. camp from where I lived near the North Sea. I also saw merchant ships torpedoed and sunk. I joined the ROYAL NAVY for twelve years, serving all over the world. We had an empire then. Also volunteered for service in submarines. A lot of my service was aboard fast patrol boats, North Sea patrol also Far East (Malaya, Singapore). After my enlistment expired, I joined the British Merchant Navy, sailing back around the world again for eight years. I have met a lot of German sailors.
