This little quiz began in KTB #102 and is only intended to improve your knowledge of submarine and naval history.

But first, a little more on the subject of the first I.J.N. destroyer sunk by an American sub. It was NATSUSHO, sunk by S-37 and not KAKO, sunk by S-44. KAKO was indeed sunk first, but she was a heavy cruiser and not a TIN CAN.

    Answers to last months quiz:

    21. I'm sure it is no surprise to learn that the US NAVY submarines suffered the heaviest losses of any group in any branch of the US service. For every American SKIMMER (surface ship) sailor who lost his life in World War II, SIX American submariners perished. The 1,700 war patrols by American submarines caused more than half of all Japan's sea losses and nearly half a million Japanese lives, the loss in American lives was the heaviest ratio of any branch of American Armed Forces, even including the US MARINES. One man out of every seven men was lost and one out of five boats did not return.

    22. The passenger liner that was featured in the movie ARISE MY LOVE was also the first naval casualty of the War - it was the Cunard Line's liner ATHENIA was sunk on 3 September, 1939 by U-30 under Fritz-Julius Lemp. This caused a world-wide scandal, but that was all covered in previous issues of our KTB Magazine.

    23. The US NAVY ship that sank so many enemy submarines in such a short time was the destroyer escort USS ENGLAND under LCDR W. B. Pendleton. ENGLAND sank five I.J.N. submarines in eight days. Actually, she sank a total of six in twelve days. My mother's cousin was killed while serving aboard USS ENGLAND.

    24. The first American submarine lost in the Atlantic was USS S-26, when she was accidentally rammed by her escort. There were only three survivors; 48 did not make it. The details will be told in a few months when we profile USS S-26.

    25. Who was the U-Boat Skipper who sank ATHENIA on 3 September, 1939? Look at question #22 above.

For KTB #108 next month, do you know.....

    26. What U-Boat Skipper tried to sink the liner QUEEN ELIZABETH?

    27. The FOUR CHAPLAINS aboard the sinking SS DORSETSHIRE who gave up their life preservers to others in 1942 were well publicized here in the USA, but can you name these four brave men?

    28. We know that many boys lied about their age to join the US NAVY in World War II, but can you name the 12 year-old kid who managed to enlist and before the NAVY found out, had earned a BRONZE STAR and a PURPLE HEART?

    29. What was the only I.J.N. battleship to survive the War?

    30. What was the only aircraft carrier of the KRIEGSMARINE?
