Italian Submarine Ambra
and IJN I-4

by Harry Cooper

Italian Submarine Ambra

On 31 March, 1940 the Italian submarine AMBRA under TV Mario Arillo, fired a spread at two ships and observed one heavy explosion, and assumed one ship sunk and one damaged. Actually, the first torpedo hit and sank the British light cruiser HMS BONAVENTURE but the second torpedo missed the Australian destroyer HMAS STUART.

Over the night of 11/12 December, 1942 AMBRA discharged FROGMEN who attached magnetic charges to five steamers which resulted in sinking of the 1,493 ton Norwegian ship BERTO at 36.48N x 03.04E on 12 December; the damaging of three British steamers: EMPIRE CENTAUR (7041 tons) in the Bay of Algeria on 11 December, HARMATTAN (4,558 tons) at 36.48N x 03.04E on 12 December, OCEAN VANQUISHER (7,174 tons) at 36.48N x 03.04E on 12 December.....and one ship for which there is no explanation.

These were the only attacks by AMBRA or Arillo during the War.

IJN I-4

On 15 December, 1941 the I.J.N. submarine I-4 under Korvettenkapitan K. Nakagawa sank the 4,858 ton Norwegian motorship HOEGH MERCHANT in the Pacific Ocean off Hawaii.

On 28 February, 1942 I-4, still under Nakagawa, sank the 1,693 ton Netherlands steamer BAN HO GUAN in the Indian Ocean south of Bali.

On 29 September, 1942 I-4 under Kapitanleutnant R. Kawasaki damaged the 7,440 ton American cargo ship ALHENA in the Pacific.

These were the only attacks by I-4, Nakagawa or Kawasaki during the War.
