One Tough Skipper in 1914

S-1's Lt.Cdr. Kellet

by Harry Cooper

It was reported in the SOCA NEWS (March 1994) that, in 1914, submarine S-1 of the ROYAL NAVY lost both diesel engines off Denmark, the main bearings froze tight. The Skipper, LCDR Kellet was not a bit afraid of the enemy, and he dove and waited for nightfall and popped up the scope when he spotted a German fishing trawler. S-1 surfaced and quietly came alongside the trawler. The ROYAL NAVY crew took the fishing boat crew aboard S-1 as prisoners, then British sailors from S-1 boarded the fishing boat and towed their disabled submarine all the way (300 miles) back to Harwich harbor!
