Mr. Gimpel: You Are Under Arrest!

by Jude Stackpole and ADM Otto Kretchmer

I was going through some old correspondence and I came across a letter from JUDE STACKPOLE (1334-1990) and he tells us that the F.B.I. Special Agent who arrested ERICH GIMPEL (884-1988) in Times Square nearly fifty years ago is a friend of JUDE. The F.B.I. Agent mentions again and again that ERICH had a very large amount of cash on him, something in excess of $60,000 in US money, a hell of a lot of loot in those days. Some of the money, about $20,000 or so, was concealed in a pack of cigarettes in GIMPEL's shirt or vest pocket. Bill, the F.B.I. Agent, speaks very highly of ERICH GIMPEL, and of his courage and fortitude.

JUDE, ERICH told me that he used a lot of this money to wine & dine the beautiful lady clerks at Macy's Department Store. I'll bet Mr. Macy never imagined a German spy was in his store, romancing his clerks. To this day, if you mention Macy's, ERICH gets a far-away look in his eyes as he remembers those beautiful clerks.
