Commanders included Kplt (later K.K.) Klaus Scholz who later became Flotillen-Chef of the 12th U-Boot-Flotille at Bordeaux, then he was Commander of the Marine Regiment Badermann (3rd Battalion); on 11 September 1942 command passed to Kplt (later K.K.) Ralf-Reimar Wolfram who was later killed on U-864; command then passed to OBLT zS MATTHIAS BRUNIG (1943-1991) until April 1944.

U-108 was attached to the famous 2nd U-Boot-Flotille based at Lorient from 22 October, 1940 until August 1943 when she was assigned to the 8th U-Boot-Flotille in Danzig/Gdansk until 11 April, 1944. On that date, U-108 was bombed and badly damaged by USAAF and RAF bombers and so on 17 April, 1944 U-108 was decommissioned at Danzig.

In addition to 2 North Atlantic patrols where U-108 sank the heavy armed merchant cruiser HMS RAJPUTANA on 13 April, 1941 and she searched for survivors of BISMARCK from 27 to 30 May, 1941 without success. She also operated in the South Atlantic & off Freetown (Sierre Leone) over September-October 1941; west of Gibraltar in December 1941; off New England in February 1942; in the Caribbean in May 1942; off Trinidad in August 1942; and off Casablanca in November 1942. She was retired as a Frontboot (combat boat) in May of 1943.

After the April 1944 bombing and subsequent decommissioning, U-108 was scuttled by her crew on 24 April, 1944. Sometime between 1947 and 1953, U-108 was raised by the Allies and broken up for scrap.
