Skippers of U-107 include Kplt. Gunther Hessler who went on to U-Boot-
Staff & who was married to URSULA DONITZ, the daughter of GrossAdmiral
Donitz (1339-1990); Oblt zS Harald Gelhaus (from 1 December 1941) who
also commanded U-143; Oblt zS (later Kplt) Volker Simmermacher (from 27
May 1943); and by Oblt zS Karl-Heinz Fritz who was lost with the boat.
Another of the boats assigned to the well-known 2nd U-Boot-Flotille
at Lorient, U-107 operated off Freetown (Sierra Leone West Africa) over
April and May of 1941; again in October of 1941 and also in October of
1942. U-107 joined the rush to the East coast of the United States in
May and June of 1942 where she operated off Cape Hatteras, the Florida
coast and on into the Caribbean. In September of 1942 and in March of
1943, U-107 operated to the west of Gibraltar. She laid mines in the
harbor at Charleston, South Carolina in August 1943 and in June 1944,
operated off the NE coast of the United States.
U-107 took on fuel and supplies from the NORDMARK, which was
disguised as the American ship SS PRAIRIE, over 3-4 May, 1941. She
also took on provisions from EGERLAND over 9-11 May, 1941. U-107 was
en route from Lorient to La Rochelle when she was sunk.

(NOTE - this ship was an ocean boarding vessel, and was also attacked at the same time by the Italian submarine BIANCHI under CC Alberto Giovannini. The first torpedo from U-107 slowed the ship markedly, and it is not certain whether it was hit by BIANCHI. It took several attacks by U-107 before MANISTEE finally sank.

Able Seaman Harry Weeks made this report upon his rescue: ".....The same officer, whom we thought to be the Captain, then asked us in perfect English, did we have any injured, did we need any food and water, did we specially need anything at all. We thanked him and answered no to his questions. He then apologized for sinking us and told us how far it was to St Miguel, gave us a course to steer by, wished us good luck, and left. The U-Boat, which I have since learned was U-107, had a large painting of a charging bison on the fore part of her conning tower and on each side of the tower an equally large painting of four aces."
