KTB Memories

by Harry Cooper

10 YEARS AGO in our KTB

In KTB #11, we were still seeking information about the 'MARINE SONDER DIENST AUSLANDS' and a shadowy man named K.K. Becker. This group and this man had a lot to do with secret and unusual cargoes travelling by U-Boat. KTB #11 was only 4 pages long and Membership dues were $25 per year in 1984. This 4-page KTB would require less than one page of the computer set KTB Magazine of today.

5 YEARS AGO in our KTB

In KTB #57, we gave the U-Numbers of the three TYPE XXI boats in what I called "THE LOST BUNKER". We asked if the ROYAL NAVY submarines SEVERN and CLYDE were keeping the ALTMARK under surveillance. There were notes on this in the logbook of ALTMARK. We asked what was the secret mission of U-1229 and who was Oskar Mantel, a special passenger on board. We told that the "official" song of U-30 (Fritz Julius Lemp) was the STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER. We reported that U-307 had been experimenting with night vision, in the form of INFRA-RED known as FLAMINGO. We translated the wording of the Presentation of the DIAMONDS to Wolfgang Luth, which was sent to him by radio and intercepted by the Allies. There was a short note on the engagement between HMAS SIDNEY and SMS EMDEN in the area around the Keeling-Cocoas Islands.

The 16 page KTB #57 would require only 4 pages of the computer-set KTB of today; and the Membership dues were the same then as they are today!
