On Eternal Patrol

Obituaries

We got a letter from GENE COHEN (1801-1991) that was very sad to myself personally and I know to those SHARKHUNTERS Members who were with our history-making first trip into RED CHINA. GENE's letter said "I am very sad to tell you that my wife Barbara passed away on December 4, 1993 after a losing battle with cancer. " Everyone who was on our RED CHINA trip remembers Barbara. She was a fun person and always had a cheerful word. JIM KLINE (300-A/LIFE-1987) was unable to attend one of our dinners in China where we all received a medallion, and Barbara remembered to bring one back to the hotel for JIM. She was a very nice lady and those of us who met her will miss her. Our deepest condolences to her husband GENE.

STANLEY WHITE (3069-1993) was a US NAVY submarine veteran of the Pacific Theater in WW II. He recently suffered an annurism and at the age of 76 and began his ETERNAL PATROL.

Sail on in peace, STAN.

HARRY HALL (1547-1990) writes: "I hope that you will find space in our Magazine to include the passing of a friend.

Walter Johs, who was with U-Boats from 1937 'til 1945 has lost his last fight. Walter passed away December 5th 1993 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Walter started in the TYPE VII boats and finished the war assigned to the highly touted TYPE XXI boat. Walter was an Engineering Officer at War's end. Most of Walter's action was in the North Atlantic. '

I am hoping you place this information in our Magazine, as Walter has many friends still in Germany and Austria."

16 February, 1994 was the day on which RADM RICHARD H. O'KANE (1540-1990) began his ETERNAL PATROL, the result of pneumonia at the age of 83. DICK O'KANE rode USS WAHOO several patrols before getting command of his own boat, USS TANG (SS 306).

His boat was sunk by a circular run of her own torpedo, and she took most of her crew down with her. Only O'KANE and eight others of the crew survived and became Prisoners of War of the Japanese.

It turned out that the destroyer escort that picked the men up also had survivors of Japanese ships that had just been sunk by TANG on board, so O'KANE and the others were tortured.

In O'KANE's words: "When we realized that our clubbings and kickings were being administered by the burned, mutilated survivors of our own handiwork, we found we could take it with less prejudice."

He won the CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR which was awarded at a special ceremony at the WHITE HOUSE in 1946, and went down in history as the most successful American submarine Skipper of World War II. ADMIRAL O'KANE, we wish you fair winds and a zero bubble.
