Lifeboats Machine-gunned
by American Ships

by Harrison Ochs

Some letters to the LEGION magazine said they saw lifeboats riddled with machine gun bullet holes, so they "knew" German U- Boats fired on helpless survivors. Who really did shoot up those lifeboats? HARRISON OCHS (1391-1991) sent us a letter in which he clears up this question, and he sent these facts to the LEGION magazine as well. He writes:

"Harry, you may print this -- I will contact the LEGION. The USCG cutter DIONE did riddle with machine guns, lifeboats to sink them so other ships would not stop and be targets for the U- Boats. No bodies were in the boats we sank. We did leave bodies in the water. There was nothing we could do for them. We could not leave our patrol to take them in."

Well, there is the explanation how some lifeboats were found with machine gun holes in them. No sinister U-Boat crew shot helpless men in the boats; our COAST GUARD was merely sinking empty lifeboats to prevent ships from stopping needlessly and becoming targets for U-Boats.

Did the LEGION print this information in their magazine? Come on, you know they didn't.
