Mandarin's Corner

Editorial

I still have a handful of S&S back issues from Vol. XXI to XXIII. So if you specifically want to order just these issues, you can send your order straight to me. Otherwise you have to deal through our back issue person Bob Burke (see his address to the left).

Fulani horseman charging a Royal Niger Company square: Morin campaign, North Nigeria, 1897. For an article on the Nigerian Emirates, see Ron Vaughan's article titled: Armies of the Sokoto Caliphate on page 4.

Bob recently informed me that he needs just TWO more issues of S&S to have a complete collection! The missing issues are:

    Vol. I, No. 3
    Vol. III, No. 3

If by any chance you have these issues,. PLEASE send a xerox copy to Bob (the originals would be even better). We will work out a trade of new subscription for these two rare issues.

I would have exhausted my article bank by the end of next issue. When I say exhausted I mean I have NOTHING more in stock. Several promised articles have not materialized, and Hans and I are both being overworked to death (Hans also have the misfortune of not having a working automobile. I heard he's got the bus schedule memorized). If everything stays normal, No. 4 should come out shortly after Christmas, and Vol. XXIV No. 1 will come out as soon as I got hold of some more articles!

A new twist on our perennial discussion on attracting new blood into our hobby: it looks like big budget historical action drama (make that WAR drama) are in vogue again. This summer we saw the release of two Columbus movies, plus Last of the Mohicans for the French & Indian War. According to the poll, youngsters are flocking to see LOTM, and there's a upsurge in local club interest in gaining the French & Indian War period. Looks like historical wargaming still has some hope!

NEXT ISSUE:

An article on the British campaign in Hawaii, by Ron Vaughan, plus an article on Italian uniforms by Marco Fantozzi.
