Large Cover (81K)

This Issue's Cover: This issue's cover illustration comes from THE GRAPHIC of March 1, 1884. It was based on a drawing by G. D. Giles and depicts the scene at the Second Battle of El Teb immediately after the breaking of the Egyptian Square. The original was a very large fold-out, so the photo lab where I get my prints done had to use a rather wide angle lens for the negative. This accounts for some of the blurring, which I hope does not distract any from the illustration. The mounted officer with the pistol in the foreground of the back cover is Major Harvey. The officer in the turban in the background is Baker, and immediately to his rear is Colonel Burnaby. For an article on Baker's defeat at El Teb, please turn to Part Two of Doug Johnson's "The Wars of the Eastern Sudan", beginning on page two.
