Introduction: Yamaoka Tesshu

Editorial

by Romulus Hillsborough

For this issue I have chosen to feature Yamaoka Tesshu. After the Restoration Tesshu became close friends with Katsu Kaishu and Saigo Takamori. He was recruited by Saigo to serve as a confidant to Emperor Meiji a rarity among former Tokugawa retainers. He was a master swordsman, and an adept of Zen who founded Zensho-an Temple in Tokyo. But it is for his heroism during the crucial and dangerous period immediately following the collapse of the Bakufu that he must be counted among the great men of the Meiji Restoration.

Also in this issue I have started "A Writer¹s Reminiscence," to reflect on my travels to historical sites in Japan over these past twenty years or so.

As usual, I welcome comments and questions.
